The 2024 eclipse will pass over the Earth in a path of totality extending from the South Pacific near French Polynesia, up through North America, through Mexico, the USA and Canada, and ending in the North Atlantic several hundred miles from Europe. The path will pass over 15 states of the USA, including Ohio.
Within Ohio, the path of totality will cross over at least a portion of 54 of the 88 counties. Large Ohio cities along the path include Cleveland, Akron, Toledo and Dayton. The path falls just outside of Columbus, Cincinnati and Canton, though it’s a short trip to totality for everyone in these cities.
The eclipse moves from west to east across the state, beginning at the Indiana border near Cedar Springs in Preble County and ending at the northeastern corner of Ohio at Conneaut in Ashtabula County, along Lake Erie at the Pennsylvania line.
The 2024 eclipse will pass over the heads of almost
8 million Ohioans, over 2/3 of the state's population of 11.75 million. And every other Ohioan will be within a couple hours' drive of the path. This total solar eclipse of 2024 could well become
the most memorable event in Ohio history!
Ohio Cities
Here are the times of totality at as seen from the centers of these Ohio cities.
NOTE:
where partial eclipse is indicated, totality will
NOT
be visible! Plan to travel at least a few miles into the path of totality. For example, while Canton is not along the path of totality, nearby Massillon is along the edge of the path and will experience less than one minute of totality. For explanations of the differences between a partial and a total eclipse, see
Eclipses Explained and
Eclipse Misconceptions. To appreciate the importance of totality, see The
Eclipse Experience.
City | Duration | Totality Begins |

Cincinnati | Partial - 99.7% | No Totality |

County Fairgrounds
A beloved Ohio tradition around the state is the County Fair. All 88 Ohio counties have fairgrounds. Of those, 48 fairgrounds will experience totality. The fairgrounds would be natural gathering places for everyone wishing to share the eclipse with their friends, family and neighbors. The following is a list of county fairgrounds that will experience totality on Eclipse Day 2024, along with durations.

The times of partial and total eclipse phases vary with location! These phases begin earlier in Southwest Ohio and later in Northeast Ohio.
Also, duration is longest along the centerline and shortest at the edges of the path of totality.
Totality begins over Ohio at 3:08 PM at Cedar Springs and then begins at Conneaut only 7 minutes later at 3:15 PM, and ending over Ohio 4 minutes later, taking only 11 minutes to traverse the Buckeye State.

NOTE! Even though totality is shorter near the edges of the path,
transient phenomena including Baily’s Beads, Diamond Ring
and Chromosphere last longer near the edges!
